Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) Bonsai Care Timeline

Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a majestic deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States, from Delaware to Florida, west to Texas, and north along the Mississippi to Illinois and Indiana. It grows in wetlands, swamps, floodplains, and river bottoms, often in standing water, developing iconic "knees" (pneumatophores) for oxygen in flooded soils. It reaches 100–150 feet tall with a buttressed trunk, soft feathery foliage, and reddish-brown bark.

Nicknamed "wood eternal" for its rot-resistant timber used in construction, it is one of the few deciduous conifers, shedding bright green needles that turn rusty orange in fall. Native Americans used it for canoes and structures. In bonsai, Bald Cypress is loved for rapid trunk thickening, buttress root development, knee formation in shallow trays, and fine needle reduction, suiting formal upright or swamp styles. It is popular in the USA for collected material from southern swamps. In USDA Zone 7 it is hardy and thrives outdoors with ample moisture.

Deciduous conifer; outdoor in Zone 7.
