Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Bonsai Care Timeline

Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a fast-growing deciduous conifer native to central China (Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan provinces), where it survives in moist valleys and riverbanks in acidic, well-drained soils. Thought extinct until rediscovered in 1943, it can reach 100–150 feet tall with a conical form, soft feathery foliage, and reddish-brown bark that flakes attractively.

As a "living fossil," it is one of only a few deciduous conifers, shedding bright green needles that turn coppery-bronze in fall. It grows rapidly and tolerates wet conditions, making it valuable for flood-prone areas. In bonsai, Dawn Redwood is loved for its quick trunk development, fine needle reduction, strong back-budding, and ability to form knees in shallow trays, suiting formal upright or swamp styles. In the USA it is popular for its vigor and prehistoric appeal. In USDA Zone 7 it is fully hardy outdoors and grows vigorously.

Deciduous conifer; outdoor in Zone 7.
