Eastern White Cedar / Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) Bonsai Care Timeline
Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis), also called Arborvitae ("tree of life"), is an evergreen conifer native to eastern Canada and the northeastern United States, from Nova Scotia to Manitoba and south to Tennessee. It grows in moist, swampy, or rocky soils in cool, humid forests and wetlands, often reaching 40–60 feet tall with a conical shape, soft scale-like foliage, and fibrous reddish bark.
Its name "arborvitae" comes from 16th-century French explorers who learned from Native Americans that its vitamin-C-rich leaves cured scurvy. The wood is rot-resistant and aromatic, used for fencing and canoes. In bonsai, it is valued for dense, soft foliage that clips well, good deadwood potential, and tolerance for pruning, suiting formal upright or windswept styles. In the USA it is popular as a hardy native evergreen alternative to imported cypresses. In USDA Zone 7 it is extremely hardy and reliable outdoors.
