Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) Bonsai Care Timeline
Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) is a variable evergreen conifer native to western North America, from Alaska south to California and east to the Rockies. It grows in diverse habitats—coastal dunes to high mountains—at elevations up to 11,000 feet, with paired needles, thin bark, and often twisted trunks (subspecies contorta is coastal, latifolia is inland/Rockies).
It is fire-adapted with serotinous cones and fast growth in disturbed areas. In bonsai, Lodgepole is valued for its twisted character, good deadwood, two-needle clusters, and vigor, suiting windswept or literati styles. It is popular in the USA for West Coast/Rocky yamadori. In USDA Zone 7 it is hardy outdoors with full sun and sharp drainage.
