Needle Juniper (Juniperus rigida) Bonsai Care Timeline
Needle Juniper (Juniperus rigida) is a distinctive evergreen conifer native to Japan, Korea, and parts of eastern China. It grows in dry, rocky hillsides, coastal areas, and mountainous regions with well-drained, poor soils and full sun, reaching 15–30 feet tall with a conical to irregular form, long, stiff, needle-like foliage (juvenile type), and reddish-brown bark that peels in thin strips.
Known as "tōshō" in Japan, it is revered for its dramatic deadwood, silver-blue needles, and ability to develop ancient, weathered appearance. In bonsai, Needle Juniper is highly regarded for its sharp, prickly foliage, prolific deadwood (jin/shari), and elegant, windswept character, making it ideal for literati, cascade, or rugged styles. It is one of the classic "big three" junipers in traditional Japanese bonsai. In the USA it is prized for its unique needle texture and yamadori potential. In USDA Zone 7 it thrives outdoors with full sun and excellent drainage.
Evergreen conifer; outdoor in Zone 7.
Spring (Mid-March – Mid-May)
Goal: Promote new needle growth and pad density.
- Light: Full sun (6+ hours daily).
- Watering: Thoroughly when top ½ inch dries (every 3–5 days).
- Fertilizing: Balanced organic every 3–4 weeks starting mid-April.
- Pruning: Pinch new tips to maintain compact pads; remove weak or inward growth.
- Wiring: Late spring on flexible branches.
- Repotting: Every 3–5 years early spring; very free-draining mix (high pumice/akadama/lava). Trim roots sparingly.
- Pests/Diseases: Spider mites, scale; neem oil preventive.
- Notes: Excellent drainage is critical to avoid root rot in spring rains.
Summer (Mid-May – August)
Goal: Strengthen foliage in heat.
- Light: Full sun; light afternoon shade if temperatures exceed 95°F.
- Watering: Daily in hot weather; drought-tolerant but avoid complete drying.
- Fertilizing: Balanced; reduce during extreme heat.
- Pruning: Regular pinching of new extension growth.
- Wiring: Monthly checks to prevent wire bite.
- Repotting: Avoid.
- Pests/Diseases: Mites in dry heat; hose foliage weekly.
- Notes: Loves hot, sunny conditions; great for desert/windswept styles.
Fall (September – Mid-November)
Goal: Harden needles and major structural work.
- Light: Full sun.
- Watering: Every 4–6 days.
- Fertilizing: Low-nitrogen in September; stop mid-October.
- Pruning: Light thinning for airflow.
- Wiring: September–October—best time for major styling and deadwood accentuation.
- Repotting: Avoid.
- Pests/Diseases: Low risk.
- Notes: Ideal season for carving and wiring.
Winter (Mid-November – Early March)
Goal: Dormancy protection.
- Light: Bright, sunny sheltered spot.
- Watering: Every 7–14 days; only when soil is nearly dry.
- Fertilizing: None.
- Pruning: Minimal; dead wood removal if needed.
- Wiring: Avoid—branches brittle in cold.
- Protection: Mulch pot base; cold frame or burlap wrap for prolonged freezes below 10°F.
- Notes: Hardy to Zone 5; Zone 7 winters are safe with good drainage.
Zone 7 Tips: Full sun and extremely sharp drainage are essential; one of the classic "big three" junipers in traditional Japanese bonsai—prized for sharp needle texture and dramatic deadwood potential.
