Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Bonsai Care Timeline
Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is a tall evergreen conifer native to Europe (Scandinavia to the Alps and Balkans). It grows in cool, moist boreal and montane forests on acidic, well-drained soils, reaching 100–200 feet tall with a conical shape, drooping branches, and short, stiff, dark-green needles. It is one of the most widely planted spruces in the world, valued for timber and Christmas trees.
Its pendulous branch habit, fine needles, and ability to produce back-buds on old wood make it suitable for bonsai. In the USA it is popular as a hardy, native-like alternative to other spruces, especially for collected yamadori or nursery stock. It develops attractive bark and good deadwood over time. In USDA Zone 7 it is very hardy outdoors and performs well with consistent moisture and sun.
