Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) Bonsai Care Timeline
Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) is a resilient evergreen conifer native to the eastern United States, from Maine to Georgia and west to Ohio. It thrives in poor, sandy, acidic soils on rocky hills, pine barrens, and coastal plains, often in fire-prone areas where it regenerates from basal sprouts and serotinous cones. It reaches 40–80 feet tall with a twisted, irregular form, three-needle clusters, thick rough bark, and prolific back-budding even on old wood.
Known for its fire adaptation and ability to sprout from trunk/stump after damage, Pitch Pine has excellent vigor and deadwood potential. In bonsai, it is underrated but prized for its rugged bark, strong back-budding, consistent second flush after decandling, and twisted character, suiting literati, windswept, or rugged styles. It is popular in the USA East Coast yamadori for native pine bonsai. In USDA Zone 7 it is hardy and thrives outdoors with full sun and sharp drainage.
