Kanuma is a soft pumice like mineral that is mined exclusively in Japan.  Kanuma is acidic so it is commonly used for azalea, camellia, blueberry and other acid loving plants that have fast growing roots and need to be repotted often.  Kanuma is pretty soft so does break down over 1-2 years time.  Most people use Kanuma by itself, but it has been mixed with other substrates to make bonsai soil mixes.
